Cal Maritime Ocean Initiative
"We Know Ocean!"
Established in 2014, the Cal Maritime Ocean Initiative grew out of an interdiscipinary research project on Ocean Literacy among college-age students at Cal Maritme and other institutions. Since then, it has expanded to support and encourage a wide range of work in ocean science, humanities, and practical disciplines. Today, the Institute seeks to bridge the humanities and social and natural sciences to address global oceanic challenges, enrich Cal Maritime’s educational offerings, and enhance its reputation as a leader in maritime education.
The Cal Maritime Ocean Initiative is dedicated to advancing comprehensive ocean literacy by leveraging Cal Maritime's expertise in maritime practice, its strategic geographical location, and its interdisciplinary faculty capabilities.
The Institute’s purpose is threefold:
- Scholarly Leadership: Foster interdisciplinary research that bridges humanities, sciences, and maritime practice, producing actionable insights for sustainable ocean governance and policy.
- Community Engagement: Collaborate with maritime practitioners, policymakers, and community organizations to promote sustainable ocean practices and elevate public discourse on ocean issues.
- Support for Pedagogical Innovation: Provide resources and frameworks to enrich Cal Maritime’s new and existing programs, ensuring students benefit from an education grounded in cultural, historical, scientific, and practical perspectives on ocean issues.
