Ahoy!
TS Golden Bear departed Los Angeles on Wednesday morning, and we are now conducting Underway Training around Catalina Island until we head back to Vallejo for our arrival on August 5th. Underway Training is the last big piece of Summer Sea Term - 1C Cadets (both engineers and deckies) rotate through a series of stations for the three days we conduct this training. Both majors get good hands-on practice with maneuvering the vessel as if they are docking, practicing with a rubber buoy. They must work together to accomplish this task, with consistent communication between the Bridge and EOS. In addition to rubber docking, all MT seniors are able to complete their Fast Rescue Boat (FRB) sign-offs. Depending on how many cadets receive this training, it can take about 3-4 days to get through each rotation.
The weather has been great so far - we are hoping it sticks around for the next couple days.
Once the FRB is deployed, Instuctors Hector Pernia and Andrew Manning will guide the cadets through different maneuvers and boat-handling techniques.
Seas are calm, but cadets and crew are required to wear proper padding when riding in the FRB as this boat has a lot of power and people get jostled around.
Down in EOS, cadets are communicating with the cadets on the Bridge and shifting the engine controls when necessary to properly maneuver the vessel next to the rubber buoy.
Meanwhile on the Bridge, cadets observe and take turns giving commands to EOS to help maneuver the ship close to the bouy. The goal is to get as close to the buoy as possible without running it over.
Fair winds and following seas!
