 A key function aboard the TS Golden Bear is the instruction and execution of crane operations. The TSGB utilizes a midship crane as well as a stern crane to perform multiple tasks such as the resupply of the vessel stores, discharge of garbage ashore, and the launching of smaller vessels and equipment at sea. Prior to crane operations a Job Safety Analysis (JSA) is filled out and details of the plan are shared with all parties involved to ensure common situational awareness. One of the most important steps is establishing the communication authority from the crane operator to the person-in-charge (PIC) of the operation. These maneuvers are often performed when loud machinery makes it difficult to hear, so hand signals and line of sight are critical.
