Uniform and Grooming Standards Policy
January 18, 2022
Dear Campus Community,
We are pleased to share with you a set of revisions to Cal Maritime’s Uniform and Grooming Standards. These changes are the result of significant engagement with – and input from – many groups and individuals during the fall 2021 semester and underscore our commitment to advancing a culture of diversity, equity and inclusion at Cal Maritime.
The revised Uniform and Grooming Standards Policy can be read here.
When we initiated this work, the goal was to adopt more inclusive Uniform and Grooming Standards. Through our engagement process, we were able to capture a broader set of perspectives to help us ensure equity and opportunity for expression by all cadets.
On behalf of the Cal Maritime administrative leadership, we want to extend our deep appreciation to those who provided input on these revisions. We want to expressly thank our Associated Students (ASCMA); Faculty Senate; Senate Executive Committee; industry partners; alumni; the Gender Equity Committee; the Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Council; and Compass.
The revisions are scheduled to take effect beginning with formation on January 24, 2022. Prior to this date, cadet leaders will meet on Thursday, January 20 at 11 am in Rizza to be informed about the changes. Briefings will also be held for Cal Maritime faculty and staff on Friday, January 21 at 10 am and 12 pm in Compass Room 1 to ensure a common understanding of the revisions and consistency in implementation.
It is important to note that even though these revisions will go into effect on January 24, they are not cast in concrete. We welcome feedback throughout the spring semester and summer cruise on these revisions and will make further modifications if warranted based on the feedback we receive.
In the meantime, we encourage you to familiarize yourself with the revised standards. We look forward to having further dialogue regarding their implementation. Please contact Dr. Mac Griswold, Dean of Cadets, or David Taliaferro, Commandant of Cadets, with any questions or concerns.

Kathleen
