Housing Policy

Residency Requirement:

All students enrolled in undergraduate baccalaureate degree programs must maintain residency on campus and participate in a resident designated meal plan (commuter meal plans are not allowed for residential students). Matriculation begins the semester a student arrives at Cal Maritime. A transfer student’s previous campus residency will apply toward the matriculated semester count.

By default, unless determined by Residence Life, all undergraduate students enrolled will be automatically assigned and charged a double room rate and a resident designated meal plan each academic year.

Assignment Priority: Housing assignment and placement priority will be given to cadets enrolled in a license track major tied to the Maritime Academy, followed by any undergraduate students enrolled in a non-license track major at the University. Students may submit specific requests in their housing application, such as building or roommate preference, but these requests are not guaranteed.

Lottery: Should space limitations apply, a lottery system will be utilized for any remaining applications, with each application receiving a random lottery number. Applications will then be reviewed and assigned, if able, by Residence Life based upon the application’s lottery position. Spring transfers must apply through the lottery, regardless of matriculation.

Contingent Upon Availability: The submission of a housing application, acceptance of a Housing & Dining License Agreement (HLDA) by the University, or payment to the University does not guarantee a housing assignment.

Administration: The Director of Residence Life is responsible for administering this policy and ensuring compliance. Determinations for student residency and off campus status shall be assessed through Residence Life, in collaboration with the Housing Committee (for off-campus petitions) which is composed of members from Residence Life, Financial Aid, Accessibility & Disability Services, and Cadet Leadership & Development.

Authority: Residence Life will make the final decision concerning housing status.

Good Standing: All students who petition for either off campus or on campus status must be in good behavioral standing. Additionally, the student’s financial account must be in good standing.

Petition Withdrawal: If granted a housing exemption, a residential bed space will no longer be reserved, and housing fees will be removed from the student’s account. If a student who petitioned for off campus status decides to withdraw their petition or decline their off campus offer, the student must contact Residence Life via email. On-campus housing may not be guaranteed due to occupancy numbers.

ADSO Process & Outcome: Documents submitted to the ADSO that are indicative of a diagnosed condition do not automatically constitute approval for health accommodations (e.g., single room, off-campus, etc.). Students must engage in the ADSO's interactive process to support consideration of their request for accommodation and subsequent decisions arrived at by the ADSO on their behalf.

Any recommended accommodations received by the ADSO from treating practitioners and / or educators are considered suggested recommendations only. They do not guarantee the outcome being sought as those service providers are not uniquely positioned to navigate the continuum of available tiered accommodations and resources offered at Cal Maritime. This is the purview of the ADSO per guidance captured in the CSU's Policy for the Provision of Accommodations and Support Services to Students with Disabilities.

Corps of Cadets: Off campus cadets are required to be a full participant in all Corps of Cadet activities and be accountable to all Corps of Cadet requirements, regardless of their residency location and distance from campus.

On Campus: On campus status may be revoked by administrative necessity due to issues not reasonably foreseen by the University, as well as in the event of misconduct listed in the Student Handbook, Student Code of Conduct, Cadet Rules & Regulations, Residence Life policies, University policies, federal/state laws, and city ordinances. Additionally, students who fail to pay any required fees, resulting in a hold on their student account, may be removed from housing at the discretion of the University.

Students who have their on-campus status revoked will not be eligible for refunds on housing fees. If a student’s on-campus status is revoked and the student must acquire off campus housing, the University will not be liable or responsible for any financial costs incurred, such as obtaining lease agreement for off campus housing or commute costs.

Off Campus: Off campus status may be revoked at any time at the discretion of the University, including the event of misconduct listed in the Student Handbook, Student Code of Conduct, Cadet Rules & Regulations, University policies, state / federal laws, and city ordinances.

Cal Maritime retains the authority to address incidents that occur off campus and incidents that are determined to be in violation of the Student Code of Conduct or Cadet Rules & Regulations. Students who live off campus are responsible for knowing all applicable University policies and respective city ordinances. Violations of University policies, or behavior that adversely affects the University's relationship with the local community, may result in revocation of their exemption to reside off campus and may also result in disciplinary action.

Abuse of the housing exemption process may result in immediate revocation of the student’s off campus status, including additional monetary penalties, in addition to disciplinary action.

Students who have their off-campus status revoked will be charged, on a prorated basis, the standard University room and board fee effective, along with any necessary administrative fees, the day their assignment to campus housing is made. If off-campus status is revoked and the student is required to return to on campus housing, the University will not be liable or responsible for any financial costs incurred or contractual arrangements which a student had entered, such as breaking a lease agreement for off campus housing.
