This is to inform the campus community about my decision to end Cal Maritime’s affiliation as a member institution with the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) and the California Pacific Conference (Cal Pac). I have made this decision in response to NAIA’s recent adoption of its Transgender Participation Policy, which is in direct conflict with California state law, California State University (CSU) policy, and our university values.

As of June 30, 2025, Cal Maritime will no longer be a member institution of the NAIA and the Cal Pac. NAIA’s Transgender Participation Policy is in direct conflict with California Education Code Section 66270, with which the CSU must comply. This law states:

ABOUT CAL MARITIME
Established in 1929, California State University Maritime Academy is the only degree-granting maritime academy on the West Coast. Located in Vallejo, California, the campus offers undergraduate degrees that prepare students for careers in engineering, transportation, international relations, business, and global logistics. Cal Maritime also offers a master’s degree in Transportation and Engineering Management, as well as a number of extended learning programs and courses.
