(Vallejo, California – July 6, 2018) – California State University Maritime Academy's 500-foot Training Ship Golden Bear has returned to the campus and departed for dry dock maintenance, but the pier at Cal Maritime's campus won't remain empty for long. The SS Red Oak Victory, the last surviving ship built at the Kaiser Richmond Shipyards during World War II is scheduled to be docked at the campus from July 9 until early August.
During the visit to campus, the all-volunteer crew will light the historic ship's boilers for the first time in 50 years.
The Red Oak Victory is a U.S. military cargo ship, originally active during the Second World War. She currently serves as a museum ship at her normal berth in Richmond – part of the Rosie the Riveter/World War II Home Front National Historical Park. The ship was one of 414 Victory cargo ships built during World War II, but one of only a few to be transferred from the merchant marine to the United States Navy. The ship was also active during the Korean War and the Vietnam War.
Cal Maritime, the temporary home to the ship, educates future leaders for the maritime and related industries – including offering degree programs that also lead to the United States Coast Guard license for professional mariners.
