(Vallejo, California – November 9, 2017) – The North American Marine Environment
Protection Association (NAMEPA) has named Cal Maritime the winner of the organization's
2017 Marine Education Marine Environment Protection Award.
Oceanography Professor Dr. Alex Parker accepted the award on behalf of the Academy
at NAMEPA's 10th Anniversary Annual Conference in New York.
The award is given to individuals and organizations in recognition of recognition
of efforts on behalf of preserving the marine environment.
"Cal Maritime has demonstrated such a commitment on behalf of the marine environment,
and has been proactive in protecting the health of our seas," said NAMEPA Chairman
Joseph Hughes and Co-Founder and Executive Director Carleen Lyden Walker in a joint
statement.
"Cal Maritime is pleased to have been recognized by NAMEPA for our efforts in the
areas of ocean literacy and environmental stewardship," said Parker. "It is our goal
to provide our cadets with a fundamental understanding of ocean processes and ocean
value so that they can engage the maritime community in meaningful discussions about
ocean sustainability."
NAMEPA is a marine industry-led organization of environmental stewards preserving
the marine environment by promoting sustainable marine industry best practices and
educating seafarers, students, and the public about the need and strategies for protecting
global ocean, lake, and river resources.
