(Vallejo, California – April 18, 2017) – Students from California State University
Maritime Academy will get under way for the first of a pair of training cruises this
weekend, beginning with a stop in Sacramento Sunday through Tuesday.
The Training Ship Golden Bear, Cal Maritime's 500-foot training vessel, departs the
Vallejo campus at 8:00 a.m. Sunday, arriving at the Port of West Sacramento at approximately
6:00 p.m. Other stops for the first cruise will include El Salvador, Seattle, and
multiple ports in Hawaii.
The annual training voyage is part of the specialized curriculum offered at Cal Maritime.
For the duration of each summer training cruise, Cal Maritime cadets are responsible
for running the ship, including navigating and driving, repairing and overseeing the
engines, and maintaining the vessel. All training cruises are supervised by Cal Maritime
faculty, the ship's captain, the chief engineer, and a team of experienced mariners.
During the cruise, cadets continue to attend classes, and intellectual learning,
applied technology, and leadership development blend daily as cadets apply what they
have learned in the classroom, in the lab, and on the waterfront.
