(VALLEJO, CA – June 21 2014) – The Training Ship Golden Bear, the 500-foot training vessel of The California Maritime Academy (Cal Maritime), will arrive in Honolulu Sunday, June 22.
 
Students, including many from Hawaii, are on board the ship, having sailed for two months, with stops in Korea and Saipan. The crew of 255 cadets and 52 faculty and staff members will change on June 25 in Honolulu when the second cruise begins. Hawaii is second only to the State of Washington in thenumber of non-California students it sends to Cal Maritime each year.
 
Cal Maritime students boast a placement rate of around 94 percent, and graduates have excellent career opportunities on land, in ports, and at sea. The unique Cal Maritime program combines classroom learning with applied technology, leadership development and global awareness, preparing students for careers in engineering, transportation, international relations, business, and global logistics.
 
The Training Ship Golden Bear's annual training voyage is part of the specialized curriculum offered at Cal Maritime. For the duration of each summer training cruise, Cal Maritime cadets are responsible for running the ship, including navigating and driving, repairing and overseeing the engines, and maintaining the vessel. All training cruises are supervised by Cal Maritime faculty, the ship's captain and chief engineer, and a team of experienced mariners.
 
Other activities planned in conjunction with the ship's visit to Honolulu are tours for prospective students and a Captain's Reception a Captain's Reception on June 24 for alumni, parents, legislators, local dignitaries and others. The ship will be at Pier 32/33 until June 28.
