Cal Maritime to Host E-Navigation Conference
(VALLEJO, Calif. – January 16, 2014) – California Maritime Academy will host a new international maritime conference, e-Navigation Underway North America, in April.
This inaugural conference, set for April 3-4, will be a regional version of the international e-Navigation Underway Conference held in Denmark. The April conference will be hosted and managed by Cal Maritime in close cooperation with the International Association of Marine Aids to Navigation and Lighthouse Authorities (IALA) and the Danish Maritime Authority, which jointly organize the international version of the conference.
“E-navigation is envisioned to be the future of marine navigation and sea traffic management from about 2018 and beyond,” said Captain Samuel Pecota, the Director of Simulation and a Professor of Marine Transportation at Cal Maritime who is also serving as the conference chair.
The International Maritime Organization defines e-navigation as "the harmonized collection, integration, exchange, presentation and analysis of maritime information onboard and ashore by electronic means to enhance berth to berth navigation and related services, for safety and security at sea and protection of the marine environment."
“The purpose of this conference is not only to introduce the e-navigation concept to those unfamiliar with the term but more importantly, to help advance the implementation process of e-navigation in North America and worldwide,” said Pecota.
There will be more than a dozen high-profile, international speakers giving presentations on the latest developments in e-navigation in the areas of: new government regulations, Sea Traffic Management (STM), e-navigation infrastructure and new electronic equipment, and changes to Marine Education and Training (MET) methods in the age of e-navigation.
Concerned stakeholders who should plan to attend this conference include maritime industry leaders, government regulators, maritime education and training professionals, professional mariners, marine equipment manufacturers, marine underwriters, admiralty lawyers, and those interested in marine spatial planning. However, any organization or individual who will be directly or indirectly affected by this upcoming paradigm shift in the way marine navigation and communication will be conducted on the navigable waterways of the world in the very near future is sure to find something of interest in e-Navigation Underway North America.
