Streaming Video

Recording

If you want to record yourself...

  • You will need a webcam and a microphone. Most of today's computers have a build in webcams and microphones. The webcams usually come with software to record the webcam feed and save the file locally to the computer. You can find a good selection on Amazon.com or at your local computer and electronics superstore. Here are a few good choices:

If you want record your screen...

  • You will need a screencasting tool or web conferencing tool with recording capability. These tools record your mouse movement and display whatever is on your computer screen. You can record mouse movements in applications like PowerPoint, Whiteboards or Web Browsers. Some applications also have the ability to simultaneously show your webcam also.

These are the tools currently available for Cal Maritime Instructors

  • Jing:  Free screencast tool that lets you record up to five minutes of onscreen video. You can chose to save the file to your computer or upload to their site screencast.com. You can download Jing here

  • Blackboard Collaborate: Enterprise level Web Conferencing solution. Instructors can host remote meetings via the web for 1 to many users,
    record a screencast and easily distribute it to students, share an interactive whiteboard as well as PowerPoints, a whiteboard and web browsers. For information on how to use Blackboard Collaborate, see the Web Conferencing page

  • Echo 360: Echo 360 is an Automated Lecture Capture system. There are two versions, the Full Lecture Capture version and the Personal Capture version.

    • Full Version: Using the full version involves coming to campus and lecturing in one of the Echo 360 locations. When you push the Lecture Caption button in one of these areas or schedule a Echo session, the system will automatically record you at the instructor podium and what ever you display on the projectors. When you are done, the system will automatically stop and save your Echo capture to the Cal Maritime Echo 360 server. The system can also email you the link to the Echo session. You can then paste this link in Moodle.
       
    • Personal Capture: The Personal Capture version allows instructors with a webcam or microphone to record themselves and their desktop or laptop screen or just their voice. Through the Personal Capture software, the recording or screencast is automatically saved on the Echo360 server and a URL is generated which can be cut and pasted in Moodle or on a website. Distributing to Students

Uploading Directly to Moodle

If you record a screencast or video of yourself  and decide to save it to your computer and NOT upload it to a service like YouTube or Dropbox, you can take this file and place it directly in Moodle as a resource or to the Media Player activity.

  • As Resource:
    You will Create a Moodle Resource and Upload the file, users will have to download the file and wait for it to finish  to view it. Here are the supported file formats
    FLV,F4V,F4P,MP4,M4V,M4A,3GP,MOV
     
  • Media Player:
    The Media Player is a Moodle activity which embeds your video within a Moodle page. This is probably the best way to display your video. The video plays while it is downloading. Here are the supported file formats FLV,F4V,F4P,MP4,M4V,M4A,3GP,MOV

Uploading to a cloud-based video or file service (Recommended)

You can upload your video to a cloud-based video or file service. These are usually free and provide an ample file space. Once you upload your video, the service will give you a link you can post in Moodle as a Resource or a code you can use to embed the video in your Moodle page.

  • If you upload your video to Youtube you can display this video in the Moodle Media Player or Embed it in Moodle. Currently Youtube is the only cloud service that will work with the Media Player

Security

Most of these services provide "security by obscurity" that is, the link provided is public and visible but not listed in search engines. This means someone would have to guess the exact URL to see your video. Usually the link provided is a random string up number, letters and characters that is *not* guessable. If you are worried about your video being publicly viewable, see each providers policies to make sure of their policies.
