EAP Information for High School Educators

What does EAP look like under CAASPP?

With the establishment of the California Assessment of Student Performance and Progress (CAASPP), starting in 2015, EAP is a fully incorporated component of the 11th grade math and English exams.  Under this new system, there is no need for supplemental questions or a separate essay segment.  Students will receive an EAP designation with their CAASPP results.  EAP will continue to serve as an early signal of college readiness for rising seniors.  We hope that the new testing model will facilitate broader and easier use of EAP by California high schools, educators, and students.

We understand that schools may have questions as these changes to our assessment model occurs, and urge you to contact our office as any concerns arise.


During the transition to CAASPP over the next two to three years, the CSU has elected to allow students to utilize their ACT and SAT scores, in addition to CAASPP results, to obtain a "Conditionally Ready" status.  The cut-off scores are as follows:

ACT English



Accordingly, the CSU will encourage juniors to participate in SAT or ACT before the end of their junior year.  This will allow schools a second measure, in addition to CAASPP results, to determine senior year math and English course placement.


Ways that our office can help your school:

Connecting you with college readiness focused, Common Core aligned professional development in math and English.

Assisting students and parents with navigating the particulars of college readiness requirements at the CSU campus of their choice and our partnering California Community Colleges, such as Solano College.

Having CSU students present in your classroom on the topics of college readiness and/ or the high school to college transition.

Advising on the adoption and implementation of the Expository Reading & Writing Course as a full-year 12th grade course and with 7th-11th grade modules.

Presenting CSU readiness information at Senior Nights, PTA Meetings, College Fairs, etc.

Working with in-school academies and specialized programs to help students become college-ready.

Connecting students with academic mentoring at select locations to assist them in preparing for college math and English.

Assisting counselors and teachers in identifying and implementing appropriate senior year instruction for students who need additional support in their pathway to college.

Supporting teachers in grades 6-9 in efforts to promote an early pathway to college readiness through the CSU "How to Get to College" initiative and "College: Making it Happen!" nights.

Expository Reading and Writing Course - A task force of high school and CSU faculty has developed the Expository Reading and Writing Course (ERWC), a full-year college preparatory English course for high school juniors or seniors. The ERWC aligns with the California Common Core State Standards, addresses critical reading and writing problems identified by the CSU English Placement Test Committee, and prepares students to meet the expectations of college and university faculty.  The ERWC qualifies as a Senior Experience for Conditionally Exempt English students, and meets the area "b" requirement for both CSU and UC preparation.

To promote wide-scale adoption of the ERWC, the CSU and County Offices of Education are collaborating to provide professional development for English teachers at a variety of locations across the state. The four-day series includes all of the course materials, provides teachers with a theoretical understanding of the ERWC, outlines the benefits of the course for students and school personnel, and offers pragmatic strategies for using the course materials to teach each module. Although districts are responsible for the cost of substitutes, the workshops are free of charge for eligible teachers. Teachers of 11th- and 12th-grade English, as well as AVID teachers, are encouraged to attend.
