Commercial Cruise, Co-Ops (Internships) and Careers
Our Mechanical Engineering Students are our most sought after upon graduation. An ME student can choose to seek a US Coast Guard 3rd Assistant Engineers License or the optional Power Generation Minor. Those students seeking a US Coast Guard 3rd Assistant Engineers License will participate in two sixty day training cruises aboard the TS Golden Bear and one Commercial Cruise. Students seeking the Power Generation Minor with participate in one TS Golden Bear Cruise and then two sixty day Cooperative Education Opportunities.
Commercial Cruise (Internship at Sea) Opportunities
All students in the Mechanical Engineering degree seeking a US Coast Guard 3rd Assistants Licenses are required to do a sixty day commercial cruise. Commercial Cruise is completed your sophomore summer after successfully passing the first training ship cruise. For Commercial Cruise you will sail aboard an actual working Merchant Marine Vessel. This is your opportunity to get hands on training while experiencing the career path you will be going into. We’ve got lots of exciting opportunities for you, around the world, on all type of vessel platforms and engine types. For example, ME students in the past have secured Commercial Cruise Billets with the following (not a complete list):
