Using the VPN to Remotely Connect to the Campus Network
About the VPN
Some of Cal Maritime's network services, such as email and Moodle, can be accessed using a web browser. To access other campus network services from off campus, such as network folders (Z: drive or other departmental folders), require a Virtual Private Network (VPN) connection. The VPN creates a secure connection or tunnel between your computer and the campus network.
The VPN also allows you to use the same email client (such as Outlook or Entourage) from off campus while connected to the campus network. it also enables faculty and staff to control the computer in their office from off campus. This is useful if you need to access files on your desktop or need to run an application that is not installed on the computer you are using off campus.
Faculy and staff can use the VPN (Virtual Private Network) device to connect to the campus network from a computer off campus. This is done by using a Web browser (Internet Explorer preferred) on the computer you are using off campus to connect to the VPN and login using your campus network credentials. The VPN establishes a secure (encrypted) connection (often referred to as a tunnel) to the campus network from off campus. Essentially, your off-campus computer will have access to all campus network resources that it would if it were connected on campus. The VPN also allows you to establish remote terminal sessions to control your office computer.
