First-Year Shipboard Living

This program which was developed in 2009 allows incoming students in the Marine Transportation and Engineering Majors to enhance their learning experience.  Each incoming student within one of these majors will be required to live on the Training Ship Golden Bear (TSGB) for 1 semester of their 1st year at Cal Maritime.

The First Year Shipboard Living-Learning program is to help develop a Familiarization onboard the TSGB for all License track majors.  These classes have been developed by the TSGB officers and Professors in the specific major.  This will allow for the students going on the TSGB cruise during their 1st summer to be well prepared and to be familiar with TSGB as a whole.

Amongst the freshman living on the TSGB will be 5 Resident Assistants as well as 6 Assistant Training Officers (ATO).  These students are either Marine Transportation or Engine Majors. The 6 ATO’s will be in charge of the program and assist the freshman in their Familiarization classes.  The ATO’s as well as the Resident Assistants are students at Cal Maritime Academy and have gone on at least one of the training ship cruises.

While onboard each resident will have a roommate and 2 other head mates.  The heads (bathrooms) are located between 2 rooms.  Each Cadet will be limited to what they can bring onboard the TSGB due to the space and electrical power output on the TSGB.  All Students in the Marine Transportation and Engineering Majors should look at the list of What to Bring on TSGB.  You will not be permitted to bring items that are on the do not bring list.

What to Bring: (Freshman MT and Engine Majors)
