California State University Maritime Academy
International Student Applicants

"What is the next available entry term?"

Fall 2017 for the following majors

(see below for application deadlines):

"When can I apply for Fall 2017 for All Majors?"

The application period will be October 1, 2016 through November 30, 2016

"How can I apply?"

Apply online at http://www.csumentor.edu/admissionapp/intl_apply.asp. There will also be a $55.00 application fee required as you submit the online application.

"What items are required for your office to make an admission decision? (See below for full descriptions)"

A completed online application, the $55.00 application fee, a minimum TOEFL score (see below), Academic transcripts (translated and official) from all colleges attended, and an Affidavit of Financial Support indicating available funds totaling $42,000.00 U.S.D. which is the approximate cost for international students to attend Cal Maritime for one academic year.

"What is Cal Maritime?"

The California State University Maritime Academy (Cal Maritime) is one of six state-sponsored maritime academies and one federal maritime academy in the United States of America. We are the only maritime academy located on the west coast of North America.

The Academy is part of the 23 state university campuses in the California State University (CSU) system. Within this group of 23 schools, we are the only focused academy and the smallest campus with 1,076 students - also known as cadets. As a four-year college, we offer six Bachelors Degree programs which are all described via the link in the left-hand column.

"Does Cal Maritime accept transfer courses from international universities?"

Please note that we do not accept transfer courses from international universities, so all international students must take our full four-year program in their selected major.

"Are there any restrictions for international students receiving any academic degrees or professional licenses?"

Three of our programs (International Business and Logistics, Global Studies and Maritime Affairs, and Facilities Engineering) have no restrictions for international students.

The remaining three majors (Marine Transportation, Marine Engineering, and Mechanical Engineering) do have a certain restriction for international students. While it is possible for an international student to receive any of these three degrees, the U.S. Coast Guard license required with these programs are not available to international students.

The U.S. Coast Guard requires that only those with U.S. Citizenship may receive a license to be an engineer or deck officer on a U.S. flagged vessel. This means international students may receive a degree from the California Maritime Academy but can NOT be an engineer or deck officer on a U.S. flagged vessel. In order to be an engineer or deck officer on an internationally flagged vessel, that person would need to leave the U.S. after attaining our degree and follow the procedures of other countries to receive a license to sail on their ships.

"What items are required to be considered for acceptance and be issued a U.S. I-20 Immigration Document?"

To be evaluated and possibly receive an offer of admission at the California Maritime Academy, international students must supply the following items:

  • A completed online international student admission application filled out during October or November of 2015 at http://www.csumentor.edu/admissionapp/intl_apply.asp
  • The $55.00 USD application fee (payable by credit card with the online application)
  • Official, translated academic transcripts from all colleges you have attended
  • An affidavit of financial support  indicating the ability to afford expenses totaling $48,000 USD per year by either yourself or your financial sponsor. A letter from a bank indicating sufficient funds must accompany the affidavit. An offer of admission and U.S. I-20 immigration document cannot be offered without this document.
  • The TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) or IELTS (International English Language Testing System) is required* for all applicants whose native language is not English**.

The TOEFL or IELTS must be taken within the last 2 years.
The minimum required TOEFL score is a 500 (paper version) or 61 (Internet-version)
The minimum required IELTS score is 6.0

    * An automatic waiver of TOEFL or IELTS will be given to graduate applicants who have earned an undergraduate degree from a U.S. institution of higher education.
