“Women And The Sea” Lecture Honors Women’s History Month

For centuries, the quest to sail the world’s waters was depicted as a conflict

between man and the sea. But women’s experiences reveal that they have always

played an active role in maritime affairs — through their work in port towns, their

adventures as seamen in disguise, and their skilled help as merchant and whaling

In honor of Women’s History Month, Dr. Elyssa Engelman, exhibit developer/researcher at Mystic Seaport: The Museum of the Sea, will speak at The California Maritime Academy (Cal Maritime), a campus of The California State University, on Wednesday, March 9, 2005.  Her lecture will focus on the history of women and the sea, which is the topic of Mystic Seaport’s “Women and the Sea” exhibit, the nation’s first comprehensive exhibit on the active role that women have played and continue to play in maritime history.

After the lecture, Dr. Engelman will be signing copies of Mystic Seaport’s children’s book “Women and the Sea — and Ruth,” which she helped develop in honor of Mystic Seaport’s new exhibit.  The book features Cal Maritime’s very own Jennifer Yount and highlights Cal Maritime as the first maritime academy to admit women into a licensed program.
