About Leading Lights
The Leading Lights program was initiated with three main goals:
1) Give Vallejo teens the chance to interact with college students and develop specific college readiness skills;
2) Give Cal Maritime cadets a forum for becoming active participants in the Vallejo community; and,
3) Give Cal Maritime cadets the opportunity to develop as leaders and budding professionals through contact with both mentees and industry mentors.
The first Leading Lights cohort of thirteen cadets was formed in September 2013. This is what our 2012-13 participants shared about their experiences in the program and within the local community:
"It gave the a chance to understand the viewpoint (of) people who live here in Vallejo."
"Going to the school and interacting with the kids was definitely my favorite part (of) the Leading Lights program this semester."
"I love being able to work with the kids...helping them with future decisions and giving them some guidance."
"I enjoy working with the students...they are so interested in a bright future. I like how the students come up to us and...ask us about what we did to get into college. These kind of questions inspire me to continue to help other students."
"I'm excited for next year to work with the kids again!"
"I love this program, I enjoy being part of it. Thank you for the opportunity."
