Department of Mechanical Engineering Commercial Cruise, Co-Ops and Careers
Mechanical Engineering (ME) students may choose the U.S. Coast Guard Third Assistant Engineer License Option or the ME Option. Students choosing the U.S. Coast Guard Third Assistant Engineer License Option will participate in two sixty-day training cruises aboard the Training Ship GOLDEN BEAR and one Commercial Cruise (Internship at Sea). Students choosing the ME Option will participate in one Training Ship GOLDEN BEAR cruise and two sixty-day Co-Ops (Cooperative Education Opportunities on Land).
Commercial Cruise (Internship at Sea Opportunities)
Students in the Mechanical Engineering degree program who choose to follow the U.S. Coast Guard Third Assistant Engineer License Option are required to sail on one sixty-day commercial cruise. Commercial cruise is completed during the sophomore summer after successfully passing the first training cruise aboard the Training Ship GOLDEN BEAR during the freshman summer. Cruise cadets sail aboard an actual working Merchant Marine vessel to gain hands-on training while experiencing life at sea in their chosen career. There are many exciting commercial cruise opportunities available around the world on all types of vessel platforms. For example, ME students in the past have secured commercial cruise billets with the following companies (not a complete list):
Alaska Marine Highway Alaska Tanker Company American Presidents Lines Chevron Shipping Company Crowley Maritime Dredge Operators Edison Chouest Offshore Foss Maritime G&H Towing Hawaiian Tug & Barge / Young Brothers Horizon Lines Hornblower Marine Services J. Ray McDermott K-Sea Transportation Laborde Marine Maresk Lines Ltd.
