I've Chosen Cal Maritime
"I am "conditionally" admitted, have sent my $500 Enrollment Deposit, and sent my Admission Acknowledgement Form, but what is still needed to become 'fully' admitted?"
- Your place is not saved until we have four specific items by May 1, 2015 (or two weeks after you were admitted - which ever date is later). Those four items are: Enrollment Deposit, Admission Acknowledgement Form, Health Forms, Housing Form. If those items arrive after May 1, then reserving your spot is on a "space-available" basis only.
- You must be must be medically cleared by our Health Review Committee (requires all your completed health forms). Any missing heath documents must be sent as soon as possible or your space in the entering class is at risk.
- You must remain eligible for admission based on your final academic transcripts (sent after completion of your Spring 2015 semester – Due in our office by July 15, 2015).
- You must meet all published deadlines for other documents or actions that must be taken such as placement testing
You May Need to Take the English (EPT) and Math (ELM) Proficiency Tests. If Needed, the Last Acceptable Testing Date is May 2th, 2015.

Demonstrating English and Math Proficiency is required for all entering CSU students at all CSU campuses, from Cal Maritime to Cal Poly to San Jose State to San Diego State. This is a great time to figure out how you will demonstrate YOUR proficiency in math and English. One way to do this is to sign up to take the CSU college placement exams called the ELM (math) and EPT (English) offered in February, March, and April. If you wait until later in the spring to take these exams, you may have to take summer courses and may even be prevented from registering for fall college courses
Scores on Other Tests or Some College Courses May Show Proficiency and Eliminate the Need to Take the ELM or EPT Tests.
You may be able to avoid taking the placement exams by showing proficiency in other ways. You can see all the items that waive the

You would be waived from needing the examinations at any CSU campus if:
- You meet the minimum SAT or ACT score
- You meet the minimum EAP (Early Assessment Program) score
- You have taken and passed a qualifying college English course and/or qualifying college math course

Step 1: Determine if you are required to participate in the Early Start Program
Step 2a: If you are required to participate in Early Start, you must enroll in and complete summer Early Start courses or you can't enroll in ANY fall courses. Follow the instructions on the Early Start page.
Step 2b: If you are not required to participate in Early Start, you are still strongly urged to take (and pass) Summer 2013 courses that meet math and/or English proficiency. These courses can be offered through a local community college or through an online school such as BYU Online. Here is a list of some of the approved courses. These are just examples. Until the course(s) demonstrating proficiency are completed, you will not be able to register for math and/or English courses placing you off-track for on-time graduation. Early Start Program
California residents who do not pass either of these two tests (ELM and EPT) must enroll in and complete approved summer courses or they cannot enroll for any courses in the fall semester. For more information see our Early Start page.
Access to your Cal Maritime E-mail Account and Campus Computing Systems
Access to your Cal Maritime e-mail account and campus computing systems was sent to the personal e-mail account currently in your file a few days after you were accepted to the school. Visual log-in instructions are available by clicking here. If you did not receive your campus username and password, please contact the Admission Office at 707-654-1330 or firstname.lastname@example.org. You need this access to receive financial aid information, receive important information from campus departments, and to register for Fall courses in June. We suggest you add your Cal Maritime e-mail account to your smart phone. Instructions were the first e-mail sent to your Cal Maritime account. Here are visual instructions for both iOS (Apple)and Android operating systems.
Please Note - If you have been logging into your Student Portal - remember that the messages you see on the screen are NOT your e-mail messages. Those are just bulletin board type messages. Once logged into the Student Portal, you must click the icon on the left side of the screen that looks like an ENVELOPE to reach your e-mail.
You may have "to do" items from the Financial Aid Office that need to be done before they can complete your financial aid offer. All the items you still need to send the Admission Office are also in your "to do" list. Once those items are completed or received, they drop off your list. Housing Information for New Students
"How and when will I receive my housing assignment?"
First, make sure you have filled out and sent in your Housing License Agreement which was part of your New Student Guide. It is due to the Residential Life Office by May 1, 2015. Those who wish to apply for permission to live off-campus should fill out the Off-Campus Housing Petition rather than the end of the Housing License Agreement.
Housing assignments are made approximately one month before the start of school. The Housing and Residential Life Staff will contact all incoming students by mail with their assignment, roommate, and check in appointment.

Be Matched with a Local Family
Cal Maritime offers a unique program called the Community Ambassador's Club, a program providing first-year students (especially those traveling a great distance) with a connection to a local family. Participating families commit to providing friendship, understanding, encouragement, and a "home away from home" to incoming students as they meet the challenges associated with a demanding first-year. Please note, students do not live with these families

"New Student Summer Reading Program"
for All New Cal Maritime Students
The Cal Maritime faculty launched a "New Student Summer Reading Program" two years ago. All incoming students are required to read the same book prior to arriving on campus. The book will then be incorporated into New Student Orientation and integrated into your first-year experience.
The book selection for your group has not be made yet. Check back here in mid-April for the announcement.
The objectives of the program are:
- Acquaint new students with Cal Maritime's academic environment, including its mission, values, and standards
- Initiate relationships between students and the campus community
- Inspire a lifelong love of intellectual learning

Advanced Placement (AP) Scores and Assigning Credit
Advanced Placement (AP) scores should arrive in our office on approximately July 10. Here are answers to some of the common questions we get about AP scores:
- What credit do I get for AP test scores? - You get college credit for every test score of three or above. The table that shows for which Cal Maritime course you receive credit is located on page 29 to 31 of the Catalog. Click here for a link to the catalog.
- How will I know when credit is assigned into my student record? - We will e-mail you a PCE (Prior Credit Evaluation). This should happen by mid-August.
- What if I am already registered in the course for which my AP score now gives me credit? - You can still take the course, you can replace the course with a different course, or you can withdraw from the course and reduce that semester's course load. Please remember to remain enrolled in 12 units or above to maintain full-time status.

About Tuition Changes
The CSU makes every effort to keep student costs to a minimum. Fees listed in published schedules or student accounts may need to be increased when public funding is inadequate. Therefore, CSU must reserve the right, even after initial fee payments are made, to increase or modify any listed fees, without notice, until the date when instruction for a particular semester or quarter has begun. All CSU listed fees should be regarded as estimates that are subject to change upon approval by the Board of Trustees.

Health Insurance Waiver Due Date in July to be Announced
Purchase of School Insurance Required for All Those Without Waivers
It is the policy of the California Maritime Academy to require all enrolled students to maintain Cal Maritime student health insurance or comparable private insurance. This is due to the special nature of the educational experience at the Academy, which includes an international training cruise or international study experience.
If you are currently NOT INSURED:
You will be automatically enrolled in the Cal Maritime insurance plan that meets all school requirements.
If you are CURRENTLY INSURED and wish to maintain your current insurance, you must:
Request a waiver from purchasing Cal Maritime's insurance plan by completing the online insurance waiver on the Student Health Services web site at http://www.csum.edu/web/health-services/required-health-insurance. The deadline to complete the online waiver from mandatory school health insurance is July 8. Please note - It is the responsibility of the student to inform Cal Maritime when coverage changes after any waiver has been granted.
Online Registration for Fall Courses
Dates in June to be Announced
New students will be sent registration instructions in early June to their Cal Maritime e-mail accounts. This includes full information on required courses for your first semester and how to register.
Are You Cleared to Register for Fall Courses?
Check to see if you have any "Holds" or "Warnings" on your student record that could prevent you from registering for certain Fall courses. Typical "holds" are due to not yet passing medical review. A typical "Warning" is a previous school's official transcript not arriving in the Admission Office. There is more information on this topic sent to the campus e-mail account you will receive or you can go directly to your PeopleSoft Self Service "Student Center" to view any "holds/warnings" you may have.
Final Transcript Deadline, July 15, 2014
July 15, 2014 is the deadline for your official, "sealed," final transcripts to arrive in our office. This is not a postmark deadline - this is the date the official (sealed) transcript must arrive in our office. On the morning of July 16, we will identify all students without final transcripts and drop them from any courses for which they have registered. This will allow students on waiting lists for those courses to fill in the newly opened spots. Students who miss this deadline may also have their offer of admission revoked.
- Graduating High School Seniors: "Final Transcript" means your official high school transcript that includes the date you graduated. Faxed transcripts or e-mailed scans will not be accepted.
- Transfer Students With Fewer Than 60 Semester Units: "Final Transcripts" means your official high school transcript that includes the date you graduated. You must also submit all official college transcripts including the one with your Spring 2014 semester grades. Faxed transcripts or e-mailed scans will not be accepted.
